Following the successful collaboration in 2023 on the International Student Housing Report, the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and the European Students’ Union (ESU) are once again joining forces on the topic of international student housing, ensuring that the voices of students are heard.
As highlighted in the XV ESNsurvey report, securing affordable accommodation while abroad remains one of the top three challenges faced by students during their mobility experiences. However, it is essential to explore the issue in greater depth to understand its root causes and identify viable solutions to this pressing challenge, which is significantly impacting the quality and accessibility of international mobility.
Through our contribution to the EAIE Spring Forum 2025, dedicated to international student accommodation, we aim to shed light on the following key issues:
- The scale and scope of the problem
- The lack of institutional support and coordination
- The urgent need for stakeholder collaboration
- Practical ways to improve the current situation

As negotiations for the new Erasmus+ Programme 2028–2034 are currently underway, it is crucial to acknowledge that these challenges remain a reality for many students. Addressing them must be a priority if we are to ensure that mobility continues to be the life-changing experience it is meant to be.
