Section in the Spotlight for October

With the beginning of October and start of the autumn we deliver you greetings from the very eastern border of ESN Empire, city of Elazig where this month’s Section in the Spotlight ESN FIRAT resides! History of ESN FIRAT dates back as long as March 2010, when the initial idea arose in group of students, to create something new. By the end of April, application to become part of ESN was submitted and on 30th of October 2010 another section was born!

New stock of ESN Cards

ESN offers the chance to the ESN Sections to order new ESN Cards. If your section wants to order ESN cards just contact our Secretary Virginie at secretariat@esn.org. We have a limited stock so primarily new sections can order. Other sections interested in more ESN Cards can contact us as well and maybe we'll find some cards for you!

Erasmusu Open Erasmus Competition

Erasmusu.com has launched an European initiative called the Open Erasmus Competition some days ago. We believe is a great opportunity to all the Erasmus and exchange students and we ask to all the ESN Sections to encourage their local students to participate in this contest.

The main objective of the contest is the creation of useful information, personal experiences, photographs, places of interest or helpful advice about any city in the world. The contest will finish the 17th of February 2013, and there are 2000€ in prizes.

So, please, send this information to all your local Erasmus students so they can start sharing their experiences in your city and have the option of winning a prize.

HousingAnywhere

We are happy to inform you about our partnership with student-to-student housing platform www.HousingAnywhere.com. This is a housing platform where outgoing Erasmus students can temporarily rent out their rooms to incoming Erasmus students during their stay abroad. Students can use this platform for free. For more information check out www.youtube.com/HousingAnywhere. In line with European Commission's policy to increase student mobility, we want to launch this housing platform for all the ESN universities.

You can launch this platform for your university, so that students can start using it too. Please check your section e-mail for more information or ask your National Representative about more information on how to cooperate with HousingAnywhere, the project will start 15 October so reply before that time if your section wants to participate in this platform.

Statement of ESN concerning the current discussion about the funding of the Erasmus programme

The Erasmus Student Network is worried about the current developments that put in danger the funding of one of most popular and successful EU programmes. The European Commission assured us that payments for students that are currently on exchange are not in danger. If no solution is found, payments for the second part of the academic year 2012/2013 might be in danger. We want to stress that we believe in the rational behaviour of the actors involved in the budget negotiation process.

We do believe, however, that letting things develop up to this point is detrimental for the image of the Erasmus programme. The insecurity created owing to this lack of consent, might cause repercussions for the credibility and brand of the Erasmus programme. In difficult times, the EU has the chance to present itself as a rational actor and an anchor of stability.

Thus, we urge all actors involved in the budget making process to solve this situation as quickly as possible and assure future exchange students that their financial support is guaranteed.
