We were expecting heads of state to advance issues of Syria, Mali, China and Iran. At the end of the Summit, where are we now?

Neo-Journalism: Aspects of a Changing Profession

Mon, 29/10/2012 - 21:57

By Aris Kokkinos
Translated by Danica Jorden

An international conference on online journalism, or neo-journalism, was held on 3-4 October in Brussels. Some illumination on this massive construction think tank.

Money, jobs, growth, pacts - how EU tries to boost employment

Mon, 29/10/2012 - 18:02

As of 18 October, the EU has engaged in talking ‘shop’. Between fighting large-scale unemployment and being in favour of positions created just to reach this goal or promoting the creation of ‘quality’ jobs, there's just one question: who’s going to do what?

A unique opportunity: K. Van Mier - E. Davignon Prize

Mon, 29/10/2012 - 17:53

Do you have an interest in writing about European Affairs? Do you write in French or Dutch? Are you a journalist or wish to become one? The European Commission Representation in Belgium is launching the 4th edition of "the Prize K. Van Miert // E. Davignon"!

Multicultural Slovenia: where did the minorities go?

Mon, 29/10/2012 - 11:00

In Slovenia, day-to-day interactions are fragmented. Casting aside the singular identity does not always imply the creation of multiple, different identities, but rather the birth of a dual identity: the idea of you and I, rather than them. This duality is among one of the first things you learn about on arrival in Ljubljana

François Hollande Press Conference: The Worst is Over!

Fri, 26/10/2012 - 11:43
By Jeanne Heuré (live at the Summit)
Translated by Danica Jorden

What was proposed in June has today been “confirmed and clarified”: the European Banking Union is born. The new union’s legislative framework will be put in place as of 1 st January 2013, thereby promoting the ECB to banking supervisory status over member states and boosting confidence in the financial markets.

Mussels, fries... and oval balls

Fri, 26/10/2012 - 10:58
By Marco Ricorda

Belgian rugby entered new ground last 20th October when London Saracens played Racing Metro Paris in a Heineken Cup game at the Roi Baudoin Stadium in Brussels. The game (ended 30-13 for the London-based team) was designed to spread interest in the game and enhance Belgium's status as an emerging rugby nation. Belgium has in fact become the 10th nation to stage a Heineken Cup match, but this is the cup's first real excursion. Before, other than games in the seven participant nations were actually short, cross-border forays by neighbouring French teams.

Emerging emergencies

Fri, 26/10/2012 - 09:36
By Aris Kokkinos

What answer to bring to the overall impact of humanitarian disasters, environmental catastrophes, terrorist activities? On 22 and 23 October the conference EU governance of global emergencies focused on the question, with answers from Europe, and from elsewhere.

Film review: The Broken Circle Breakdown, Flemish finest

Thu, 25/10/2012 - 11:05

When we are confronted with illness, death or any other challenge that life throws at us, we all look to our own source of comfort. For some people that means religion, for others it’s music. Director Felix van Grœningen's fourth film is an exploration of both paths. The drama never becomes a melodrama, and aesthetics are to the fore in this feast for eyes and ears

“Where are the European legislators?”

Wed, 24/10/2012 - 16:47

By Marnix de Witte

Last week, Amnesty International and The European Group of Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats co-hosted a meeting to question Italian pushback practices in the Mediterranean. The event was well-organised, interesting and eye-opening, but the "debate" that followed was, sadly, characterised by an absence of engaged dialogue between European legislators and NGOs.

Like a bat out of hell

Wed, 24/10/2012 - 14:38

How do different European expressions convey that feeling of rushing around at hurried top speed? You’d need a stellar beastly cast of a tarantula, bat, devil, cat and pig to explain yourself across the languages. Idiom of the week

Asylum meets art in Slovenia

Wed, 24/10/2012 - 13:22

Slovenia, a transit country for migrants and immigrants from its EU and Balkan borders and beyond, boasts its own asylum culture. In the self-declared autonomous culture zone of Metelkova mesto in the capital, Studio Asylum plays with the concept of asylum by encouraging multicultural diversity via the arts. The local authorities, however, are still hesitant to collaborate

A Turkish tale of cafebabel.com and borders: an insider/outsider story

Wed, 24/10/2012 - 13:09

I am not a journalist. I sometimes practice journalism, extensively study journalism, and mostly hang out with journalists, but I wouldn’t identify myself one. However, when Café Babel team asked me to join their project briefly this summer, I knew I was embarking on a great adventure. It is rather strange to praise a publication to its readers but Café Babel is truly one of those gems in European journalism that give you hope and excitement about future because you know networked journalism is not solely a fancy academic jargon, but an exciting experience that you can easily be part of

European development aid at a crossroads?

Wed, 24/10/2012 - 12:19

By Elena Fanetti

On October 16th and 17th, Brussels hosted this year’s edition of the European Development Days. This event is organized by the European Commission and aims to promote dialogue between the European Union and its partners in the so-called "South". Policy-makers from the European Union were engaged in discussions over the future of EU development policy and aid. The EU is the first development donor in the world but this financial aid is at risk of possible cuts in the new budget for 2014-2020.
